Child Care Assistance Co-pays

How Co-pays are assigned

When DCF approves a family for Child Care Assistance, the amount of the benefit they receive partially depends on the family income. If the family’s income is less than the federal poverty level, they will get the full amount of child care benefits. Except in certain cases, if a family’s income is over 100% of the federal poverty level, a copayment or family share deduction (FSD) is assigned.  The amount of the family share deduction depends on the number of people in a household and their income. A family’s FSD will be about 3% or less of the household’s monthly income before taxes. See the chart below for your family’s FSD. The FSD is subtracted from the total monthly child care benefit before the benefit is added to a family’s EBT card. The amount of the FSD will not go up before the next annual review, but it may go down if the family tells DCF they have less income.

Family share deductions (co-payments) are not assigned for:

  • Families who have at least one person who gets TANF cash assistance.
  • Families who were getting TANF and apply for Child Care Assistance in the first two months after they lose TANF.
  • Families whose TANF case closed but continue getting provider services and other supports through DCF Work Programs.
  • Families who get Food Assistance if the adults work with the Employment and Training Program.
  • Families who get child care for social service reasons (like families getting services through a family preservation contractor or DCF Social Worker, children in foster care, or families in which the parents are working at certain jobs during a disaster or emergency declared by the State of Kansas).
  • Families who work with the Kansas Early Head Start Child Care Partnership program.

Note:  Families may have to pay their child care providers more than the amount of their FSD (co-payment).  This can include amounts child care providers may charge that are more than the amount of the child care benefits. This can also include other fees Child Care Assistance doesn’t cover (like activity fees or transportation fees).  Any extra charges should be written in a family’s contract or agreement with their provider.
